Brazil’s SPA-MF has 40 sanction cases open against betting sites after suspending 14 platforms
Brazil’s Secretariat of Prizes and Bets, SPA-MF, says it currently has 40 administrative sanction proceedings underway against sports betting sites. The timing matters for any PSP touching Brazilian wagering: the Ministry of Finance has already suspended 14 platforms, and the regulator is using information-disclosure failures and obstruction issues as the trigger.
- The new cases come after the Ministry of Finance imposed a precautionary suspension on 14 betting platforms last week, citing risk to regulatory oversight, bettors, and the regulated market. According to the SPA-MF, the suspensions were driven mainly by failures in sending information and documents, which undermined the government’s ability to monitor the platforms.
- CNN Brasil reported the development. The SPA-MF said sanctions resulting from the ongoing cases are only made public after the proceedings are concluded, following the same procedure used for the suspension decision affecting the 14 platforms.
- Between May 2025 and May 2026, the SPA concluded 39 administrative cases, all of them final. The violations covered a range of conduct: obstructing inspections, carrying out activities prohibited by sector regulation, and refusing to provide information or documents to the government.
- In those completed cases, the penalties ranged from warning to fines and suspension of operations. For operators and their payment partners, the message is pretty plain: document requests and supervisory access are not paperwork to be negotiated after the fact.
- While the sanction proceedings are ongoing, the suspended sites must display a specific suspension notice for users. The SPA said that on the affected platforms, only access for withdrawing players’ funds is allowed. The suspension stays in force until the cases are concluded and the Ministry of Finance confirms the companies have met the requirements. If the platforms ignore the orders, the fine is R$ 200 mil per day.
