Northern Territory proposes A$500 monthly deposit cap for 18–21-year-olds, with bonus bets and VIP schemes also banned

The Northern Territory in Australia has put forward a bill that would cap monthly deposits for players aged 18–21 at A$500 and ban bonus bets and VIP programs. For high-risk operators, the point is not the headline number — it is the combined hit to acquisition, retention, and player-value segmentation in a market that includes around 50 bookmakers.

  1. The proposal would limit monthly deposits to A$500 for players aged 18–21 in the Northern Territory. That is a direct restriction on the cash-in side of the player lifecycle, and one that operators would need to build into onboarding, limits management, and ongoing affordability controls.
  2. The bill would also ban bonus bets and VIP programs. For bookmakers, that means two of the standard retention tools are on the chopping block at the same time as deposit limits, which changes the economics of younger cohorts quite sharply.
  3. The measure is expected to affect around 50 bookmakers, including Sportsbet and bet365. So this is not a niche compliance tweak for one or two local brands; it lands on a meaningful slice of the market.
