Shopify’s Fall ’26 Edition adds payments, fraud tools, and AI-agent connectors for merchants worldwide

Shopify’s Fall ’26 Edition adds payments, fraud tools, and AI-agent connectors for merchants worldwide

Shopify has rolled out its Fall ’26 Edition, Exponential, with new payment, risk, and AI-commerce features aimed at merchants operating at scale. For PSPs and other payment providers, the notable bit is not the branding; it is that Shopify is tightening the link between checkout risk controls, chargeback handling, and AI-driven commerce flows.

  1. Shopify Protect now bundles risk and dispute tools in the admin to help stop fraud at checkout and fight chargebacks automatically. Merchants can also use the Shopify Protect Rule Builder to write and test their own fraud rules, while signals from millions of businesses feed into Shopify’s defenses, so a card flagged on one store is already known at the next.
  2. Shopify says Shopify Payments prevents more than 12,000 high-risk payments every minute, at no extra cost to businesses using it. For merchants in higher-risk categories, that is the operational point: more of the fraud decisioning sits inside the platform, not in a separate stack a merchant has to stitch together.
  3. On the agentic commerce side, Shopify Connectors now work with nine agents: ChatGPT, Claude, Claude Duet, Copilot, Gemini, Grok, Grok Bot, Muse, and Perplexity. Merchants can connect Shopify to the AI agents they already use to manage products, inventory, orders, and performance without leaving the conversation.
  4. Sidekick, Shopify’s AI assistant, can now run calculations, write code, search the internet, and remember what a merchant teaches it. Shopify says it will handle technical work while ensuring the merchant approves its changes, which matters because this is the kind of automation that can move from support function to actual operational control.
  5. Shopify is also building Shop.md, a Shop skill that turns any AI agent into a personal shopper. Buyers can point ChatGPT, Claude, or another agent to shop, with Shopify remaining the commerce foundation behind the product, order, and store operation layer.

Ben Homer, Shopify’s Solutions Engineering Lead, framed the release as a response to commerce becoming more complex and less linear. In practice, the message to payment teams is straightforward: the checkout, fraud, and shopping journey are being pushed deeper into Shopify’s own infrastructure, and the platform is making that layer more AI-aware at the same time.
