FBI and U.S. Secret Service open investigation into Binance hack
Payments High Risk

The FBI and the U.S. Secret Service have started investigating the circumstances of a large-scale hack at crypto exchange Binance. For high-risk payment teams, the important part is not just the breach itself, but that U.S. law enforcement is now involved in tracing, freezing, and recovering the stolen funds.
The FBI said it has been briefed on the incident and is working with public- and private-sector partners to assess the scale of the activity, analyze possible consequences, and coordinate the necessary investigative steps.
The Secret Service said its investigators are working around the clock with private-sector partners, including Circle, the USDC issuer, to identify, freeze, trace, and return funds stolen from Binance on Thursday.
The Secret Service also said it is working closely with the District of Columbia attorney’s office and law enforcement agencies to identify the cybercriminals involved and bring them to justice.
The case puts another spotlight on the operational side of crypto theft response: once funds move across wallets and counterparties, recovery becomes a coordination exercise between exchanges, issuers, and law enforcement rather than a single-company fix.
