Why U.S. casinos are choosing hybrid payments instead of going fully cashless

Cashless gaming has been sold as the next step in casino modernization, but in the U.S. the rollout is turning out to be more gradual. Operators are not replacing cash outright; they are adding digital funding options where they fit, which matters for PSPs because integration, cost, and customer adoption are doing most of the limiting.

  1. One concrete example is Station Casinos, which began testing TrustedTap, a solution developed by Adostics that lets customers use Apple Pay linked to a debit card to fund compatible slot and video poker machines. The trial, reported in July 2026, was taking place at Durango casino bars, Wildfire Anthem and Seventy Six taverns, subject to the applicable regulatory process.
  2. The point of the setup is straightforward: players can move funds directly to a machine without first going to an ATM or cash kiosk. It also works with existing casino infrastructure, which is the part operators care about most in practice — new payment methods without ripping out the whole gaming-floor stack.
  3. Station Casinos has also deployed IGT’s Resort Wallet and IGTPay through its STN Cash app at several Las Vegas properties, while Boyd Gaming has introduced cashless solutions in partnership with Aristocrat. So “cashless gaming” is not one product category; it can mean mobile wallets, account-based systems, debit-card funding, or tools tied into casino management platforms.
  4. For operators, the decision comes down to the existing technology environment, implementation cost, and how easily customers will actually use the service. Executives are also looking at whether digital payment options reduce the amount of cash on the gaming floor, while still having to deal with integration between suppliers, system upgrade costs, loyalty programs, ticket-in, ticket-out systems, and cage operations.
  5. The result is a market moving in increments rather than in one clean switch. Smaller casinos face tighter financial constraints when introducing new technology, which is why the next phase of casino payment modernization is more about hybrid funding than about eliminating cash.
