Binance’s Greek MiCA application reportedly blocked after Christine Lagarde call, according to WSJ report

Binance’s bid to enter the EU’s crypto licensing regime via Greece has run into a political-looking roadblock, at least if a Wall Street Journal report is to be believed. For high-risk PSPs, the part that matters is simple: MiCA approval is not just a paperwork exercise when central-bank and political pressure enter the room.

A vice chair of Greece’s Hellenic Capital Market Commission reportedly told Binance that Christine Lagarde asked Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis not to approve the exchange’s Markets in Crypto-Assets Regulation application, according to a Wall Street Journal report referenced by Cointelegraph.
2. Neither Lagarde, the European Central Bank, Greek authorities, nor Binance has confirmed the account. So the factual state of play remains exactly what it sounds like: there is a report, and there is no public confirmation from any of the parties named in it.
3. Binance filed its Greek MiCA application in January, choosing Athens as its entry point into the EU’s crypto licensing regime. By early June, Greek officials had reportedly informed the European Securities and Markets Authority that the Hellenic Capital Market Commission intended to approve the application.
4. That earlier signal mattered because it made the Greek route look close to a formality. The reported intervention changes the read for any operator that treats MiCA as a clean regulatory checklist: in practice, the process can still be shaped by institutions outside the obvious licensing chain.
