CBF investigates suspicious betting on Lucho Acosta yellow card in Fluminense vs Bragantino

A yellow card shown to Fluminense midfielder Lucho Acosta in the 1–1 draw with Bragantino on 17 August at the Maracanã has triggered a match-fixing alert from a betting operator. The case is now under preliminary investigation by the CBF, after Stake flagged abnormal betting volume and notified Sportradar, the FIFA-contracted monitoring company.

1. According to the report received by the CBF, the alert concerned bets on Acosta being booked in the 19th round of the Brasileirão. The federation has opened an investigation, and the process is still in its early stages.
2. Fluminense said it had been formally notified by the CBF in a confidential notice last week and said Acosta denied any involvement in wrongdoing. In its statement, the club said it is available to cooperate with the competent authorities.
3. Stake reported unusual volume on the punishment market for Acosta in the match against Bragantino. After that, the information was passed to Sportradar, which monitors the Brasileirão for FIFA, and then forwarded to the CBF.
4. The yellow card itself came in a chaotic late sequence. In the 47th minute of the second half, after a general altercation between players from Fluminense and Bragantino, Acosta entered the fray, pushed Lucas Barbosa, and then exchanged shoves with Gustavo Marques before referee David Lacerda booked him after a VAR review led to the expulsions of John Kennedy and Fabinho.
5. The disciplinary angle is not new for this incident. At STJD, Acosta was tried over the melee but was acquitted, along with Freytes, who was also involved. John Kennedy received a two-match suspension.
