Airpay raid in India disrupts high-risk UPI Intent payment flows

Last weekend turned into one of the more stressful ones for India’s high-risk payments market. According to sources cited by the original report, raids took place at Airpay offices, after which channels were quickly suspended, leaving a large part of the UPI Intent stack scrambling.

  1. Market participants estimate that Airpay handled 80–90% of UPI Intent gateways in India’s high-risk segment. If that figure is anywhere near right, the operational blast radius is obvious: when one provider stumbles, a big chunk of the vertical feels it at once.
  2. By Monday, some providers had restored processing through the same Airpay setup. Others were still reporting problems, while some were waiting to see how the situation would develop before making any move.
  3. The market is also discussing two separate issues: rumors of possible criminal proceedings against Airpay’s management, and a reported selection of MIDs (merchant IDs) for which settlement will not be paid out. If that second point is confirmed, some PSPs and merchants could be looking at lost funds and serious cash-flow gaps.
  4. Airpay has not issued an official comment, so the situation remains unresolved. For high-risk PSPs, that usually means the practical question is not “what happened?” but “which routes are still alive, and which balances are now trapped?”
