World Cup 2026 pushed online betting searches in Argentina up 350%, with ad breaks driving live play

A study from Argentina says interest in online betting surged around World Cup 2026 matches, especially during the national team’s games. For PSPs and operators, the useful bit is not the sports angle; it is the timing: hydration breaks became one of the most active windows for live betting traffic.

  1. The report was prepared by Walter Martello, Deputy Ombudsman of the province of Buenos Aires, using data from the Observatorio de Adicciones y Consumos Problemáticos of the Buenos Aires Ombudsman’s Office. It relied on Google Trends, which measures relative search interest on a scale from 0 to 100.
  2. According to the study, searches linked to betting platforms rose 350% overall. The authors also said hydration breaks, introduced for the first time in a World Cup, turned into one of the moments with the highest interaction with live betting platforms.
  3. The report says TV broadcasts in Argentina ran commercial breaks with ads for betting operators during those hydration pauses, and that this may have encouraged new users to access those sites. In other words: on paper it is a sports timeout, in practice it is a traffic spike.
  4. Specific match data was even more dramatic. During Argentina vs England, betting-related searches increased 4,850%. As Argentina progressed in the tournament, searches also rose: 600% against Algeria, 2,250% against Cape Verde, and 3,600% against Egypt.
  5. A separate report from Novarum also tracked Google search behavior during Argentina’s matches and found differences between operators that advertised during hydration breaks and those that did not. Betano and BetWarrior, both shown during those interruptions, recorded increases of 82 and 23 points, respectively, in the search index during Argentina vs Austria. Betsson, which was not promoted in those cuts, reached a peak of 12.9 points only at halftime.

The report also says the study identified the entry of people with no prior betting experience into the betting ecosystem, which matters for acquisition and compliance teams watching how fast sports events can turn into a customer funnel.
