Allies of President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva met on Wednesday evening, 30 September, to decide how to answer pressure from football clubs after the government’s move to ban online betting in Brazil. For PSPs and betting operators, the point is not the political theatre; it is the risk that regulatory pushback turns into operational disruption.
The meeting was reported by Milena Teixeira at Metrópoles and was aimed at aligning the campaign’s message on the issue after Lula signed a provisional measure banning online bets in the country.
One wing of Lula’s allies wants any contact with the clubs to happen only after the first round of elections, scheduled for Sunday, 4 October. In other words: keep the conversation on ice until the vote is done.
The clubs had already escalated the pressure before the meeting. After the provisional measure was signed, teams protested and even threatened to halt the Campeonato Brasileiro.
They also boycotted a meeting scheduled for Tuesday, 29 September, with representatives from the Serie B and C clubs and three ministers: Dario Durigan, from Finance; Bruno Moretti, from Planning; and Paulo Henrique, from Sport.
Inside the government, advisers believe the measure has landed well with Lula’s base. A PT survey reviewed by the column analysed 112,000 occurrences across digital platforms and found that 76% of the mentions were classified as positive for the government.
