Four Arrests in Turkey Over Alleged Seven-Second Live Betting Delay Scheme
Turkish authorities have detained eight suspects and jailed four pending trial in a case that centers on a seven-second delay in live sports data updates. For PSPs, sportsbooks, and data providers, the interesting part is not the courtroom drama but the mechanics: if real-time feeds are manipulated, live betting markets can be exposed before odds are suspended or adjusted.
- Prosecutors allege that a data analyst identified as O.B., who worked for Spordata, deliberately delayed entering live match updates by around seven seconds. The alleged setup allowed associates to place bets after the outcome of a point was already known, which is exactly the kind of timing gap that live betting systems are built to eliminate.
- Authorities say the scheme caused losses of around 12 million TRY ($240,000) to Spordata and to licensed sportsbooks relying on its services. The matches reportedly targeted included tennis and volleyball, both of which depend heavily on rapid suspension and odds recalibration during play.
- According to Turkey’s Anadolu Agency, raids on October 23 led to the detention of eight suspects. Four people have since been jailed and are currently pending trial, while the analyst at the center of the investigation had already been in custody since July.
- Habertürk reported that Spordata flagged suspicious activity to prosecutors in June after investigating substantial losses. The company allegedly called the employee in to explain the irregularities, but he resigned before the meeting took place.
- Investigators reviewed system logs, surveillance footage, and electronic communications, and MASAK, Turkey’s Financial Crimes Investigation Board, found a combined total of 192 million TRY, approximately $3.9 million, in incoming and outgoing transactions through the analyst’s bank accounts. That figure reflects the flow through the accounts, not necessarily profit.
The case is a reminder that live betting risk is not only about chargebacks, fraud rings, or bonus abuse. If the feed itself can be delayed, the sportsbook’s exposure starts upstream, at the data layer.
