US Justice Department is examining Binance over possible sanctions evasion tied to Iran

US prosecutors in the Southern District of New York and the Justice Department’s criminal division are reportedly looking into whether Binance allowed crypto transactions that bypassed sanctions on Iran. For high-risk payment operators, the point is not the headline itself; it is that investigators are said to be focused on compliance controls, beneficial ownership checks, and whether any violations were intentional.

  1. According to sources, the review is being conducted by the US Attorney’s Office for the Southern District of New York together with the DOJ’s criminal division. They are examining whether Binance, the largest crypto exchange by trading volume, permitted cryptoasset activity that sidestepped Iran sanctions and whether any breaches were deliberate.
  2. Binance said it maintains a policy of zero tolerance for sanctions violations and that it fully cooperates with law enforcement. The company also said it remains focused on identifying and stopping bad actors.
  3. The specific transactions that caught the attention of US authorities have not been disclosed. Bloomberg’s sources said investigators are reviewing Binance’s compliance systems and checking how effectively the exchange tracked the beneficial owners of transactions processed on the platform.
  4. The review may end without any formal charges. That matters for the market because an investigation is not the same thing as an indictment, but it still puts a spotlight on how exchanges handle sanctions screening and customer due diligence.
  5. In a related case, the US Justice Department previously accused an international network of intermediaries of laundering more than $1.5 billion in proceeds from Iranian oil sales. US authorities said Chinese companies Blessed Trust and Hexa Whale Trading played a key role in the scheme and used corporate accounts on Binance.
