Brazil’s Receita Federal collected R$ 7.284 billion from gambling and betting in H1 2026, up 83.31%
Brazil’s federal tax authority said it collected R$ 7.284 billion from betting and games of chance between January and June 2026, up 83.31% from the same period in 2025. For PSPs and operators, the important bit is that the money is being pulled by both higher GGR (Gross Gaming Revenue, the revenue base after prize payouts) taxation and a still-recovering betting volume.
- The Receita Federal figures, published in the June 2026 Monthly Analysis and presented on Thursday (30/7) by auditors Claudemir Malaquias, head of the Center for Tax and Customs Studies, and Marcelo Gomide, coordinator of Forecasting and Analysis, show a first-half total of R$ 7.284 billion, versus R$ 3.974 billion in January-June 2025.
- In June alone, the government collected R$ 1.385 billion from betting, compared with R$ 900 million in June 2025. That was the second-highest monthly figure in the semester, behind only January’s R$ 1.490 billion.
- A big part of the increase came from a higher GGR tax rate. Under Complementary Law No. 224/2025, the rate rose from 12% to 13% on 26 March 2026, after the 90-day waiting period required by law. The schedule also sets further increases to 14% in 2027 and 15% in 2028.
- According to estimates from the Ministry of Finance, the 1 percentage point increase should add R$ 850 million to federal revenue this year. That is the sort of change that matters immediately for operator economics and for how PSPs model exposure to Brazilian gaming flows.
- The data also suggest that the World Cup did not create a volume spike. June included 22 days of the tournament, which started on 11 June and had 72 matches in the first stage, yet June’s revenue still remained below January in implied GGR terms. In other words: higher tax, seasonal recovery, but no dramatic betting boom.
The same monthly analysis shows a seasonal pattern inside the semester: revenue fell 30.2% from January to February and then another 17.4% from February to March, a period that coincides with Carnival, before starting a steady recovery from April onward. For market participants, that is a useful reminder that Brazilian betting tax receipts are being driven by both seasonality and tax-rate changes, not just by headline sports events.
