World Cup drove $20 billion in blockchain prediction market volume, Chainalysis says

The 2026 FIFA World Cup didn’t just move attention and television screens; it moved money. Chainalysis says the tournament generated $20 billion in blockchain-based prediction market volume and $24 million in digital collectible trades, with more than 400,000 wallets participating.

  1. The $20 billion figure covers trading before and during the tournament. Chainalysis says bettors placed roughly $5.7 billion in wagers over the five-week World Cup itself, and World Cup-related markets made up about 63% of all prediction market activity during that period.
  2. Participation was global in the literal sense: users from every continent except Antarctica showed up in World Cup prediction markets, according to the report. The United States and China generated the highest attributable trading volumes, followed by Canada, Thailand and the United Kingdom.
  3. For PSPs and compliance teams, the notable part is not just the volume, but the screening result. Chainalysis said fewer than 1% of wallets participating in World Cup prediction markets had ties to illicit actors, though it identified roughly $5.4 million in flows originating from sanctioned entities and other illicit sources.
  4. Chainalysis also flagged digital collectibles as part of the same event flow. Fans traded about $24 million worth of FIFA Collect NFTs during the tournament, and more than 100,000 match tickets were distributed through the platform.
  5. Wallets linked to sanctioned entities accounted for less than 0.01% of FIFA Collect users, which Chainalysis attributed in part to the platform’s identity verification requirements. That is the basic lesson here: once high-traffic event products start pulling in broader participation, controls stop being a nice-to-have and start looking like the whole business model.
