Brazil collected R$ 9.91 billion from betting and gambling taxes from January to August 2026

Brazil’s Federal Revenue service says it collected R$ 9.91 billion from the taxation of betting and gambling between January and August 2026, including Caixa lottery taxes. That is already almost the full R$ 9.95 billion collected in all of 2025, which tells you where the money is — and why the government is not leaving the sector alone.

1. In August alone, the sector brought in R$ 1.163 billion, down 20.51% from R$ 1.463 billion in July. It was the first monthly decline since the Carnival period in February and March.
2. The January-August total of R$ 9.91 billion was 69.25% higher than the R$ 5.857 billion collected in the same period of 2025. The figures were released by the Federal Revenue service in its economic division revenue report on Tuesday, September 22.
3. The August number includes federal taxes such as IRPJ, CSLL and PIS/Cofins. In other words, this is not just a line item for betting operators; it is direct federal tax revenue flowing through the sector.
4. Officials from the Federal Revenue service, Claudemir Malaquias, head of the Center for Tax and Customs Studies, and Marcelo Gomide, coordinator of Forecasting and Analysis, presented the August 2026 Monthly Analysis.
5. On paper, Brazil was on track for a steadily rising monthly pattern since April, with receipts above R$ 1.4 billion in almost every month. August broke that run, and the report notes that there was no Carnival-style seasonal explanation this time.

For high-risk PSPs, the practical point is simple: Brazil’s betting tax take has already matched last year’s full-year total with four months still left in 2026. At the same time, August’s drop shows how quickly monthly volumes can move when a major event cycle ends.
