World Cup 2026 doubles betting customers in Mexico, AIEJA says
The FIFA World Cup 2026 pushed sports betting volume in Mexico higher and, according to AIEJA president Miguel Ángel Ochoa Sánchez, nearly doubled the number of customers on betting platforms. For PSPs and acquirers, the interesting part is not the spike itself — it’s the combination of real-time processing, live betting growth, and the harder problem of keeping those users after the tournament ends.
- Ochoa Sánchez, president of the Asociación de Permisionarios y Proveedores de la Industria del Entretenimiento y Juegos de Apuesta (AIEJA), said the tournament was a turning point for the sector because it drove online betting growth, real-time transaction processing, and new user acquisition on platforms.
- He said some operators saw demand rise by between 30 percent and 40 percent versus normal daily activity, and that in the tournament aggregate they “practically doubled” the customer base, not just the betting volume.
- Mexico was among the most active markets for international platforms during the World Cup, helped by expectation around the Mexican national team and continued fan interest throughout the competition. Ochoa Sánchez said activity in Mexico over four weeks was “one of the most outstanding in all markets in the world.”
- Even after El Tri was eliminated, platform activity stayed elevated as users followed the final stages of the tournament. The thing is, for operators the operational challenge is no longer only handling event-day traffic, but converting that tournament spike into retained users.
- One of the clearest product shifts was in live betting: Ochoa Sánchez said hydration breaks created new windows for in-play wagers, and live-bet volume increased by between 60 percent and 150 percent. He also said companies in the sector reported more than 70,000 betting combinations per match, supported by artificial intelligence tools and mass data processing.
For high-risk payment providers, the takeaway is straightforward: major sports events can compress huge transaction volumes into short windows, with heavy dependence on real-time authorization, in-play betting flows, and infrastructure that can handle thousands of wager combinations per match without choking on minute-by-minute peaks.
