Brazil blocked more than 13,000 illegal betting sites in 12 days

Brazil’s interagency task force on illegal betting says it has moved fast: 13,241 web addresses were sent for immediate blocking after the temporary betting restriction took effect. For PSPs and payment teams, the more interesting part is that the sweep did not stop at domains — the authorities also went after promotional channels and set a timetable for refunding player balances tied to frozen licenses.

  1. The task force includes the Secretariat of Prizes and Betting (SPA) under the Ministry of Finance and Ciberlab, the cyber lab of the National Secretariat of Public Security. According to the group’s first update, it targeted 13,241 web addresses for immediate blocking, which works out to about 1,103 sites per day.
  2. Finance Minister Dario Durigan said the review also covered distribution channels used to push betting offers. Authorities demanded the removal of 3,552 profiles and groups across Telegram, TikTok, WhatsApp, and Discord, with a combined audience of around 17.2 million subscribers.
  3. Operators with frozen licenses were required by 7 October to send banks the CPF data, balances, and account details of players. That matters operationally: once the regulator starts moving funds, the payment chain has to know exactly whose money is where, and in what form.
  4. From 9 to 14 October, banks were to return funds automatically to players. If that does not work, the money goes to Caixa Econômica Federal, which is set to handle the remaining payouts from 14 October.

For high-risk merchants and PSPs, Brazil is showing the full playbook: domain blocking, social-channel takedowns, and a bank-led payout process for stranded balances. If you operate in betting or adjacent verticals, this is the kind of jurisdiction where payment rails and licensing status can change the business model before the marketing team has even finished its campaign calendar.
