Betsson and HJK Helsinki sign five-and-a-half-year partnership from 1 July 2027, subject to Finnish licence approval
Betsson and HJK Helsinki have agreed a five-and-a-half-year football partnership that the club says is the largest club deal in Finnish football history. For high-risk operators, the key detail is not just the duration: the agreement can only start if Betsson secures the relevant licence under Finnish gambling legislation.
- The agreement was announced on 22 October 2026 and is scheduled to run from 1 July 2027 until the end of 2032. HJK says the deal is its largest club partnership in Finnish football history, but the announcement does not give a contract value.
- The partnership covers both HJK's men's and women's senior teams, which places the club into Betsson's international football partnership network. In practice, this is broader than a one-team sponsorship and gives the deal a wider sporting footprint inside the club.
- The catch is regulatory: the arrangement depends on Betsson obtaining the appropriate licence under Finnish gambling legislation. The announcement does not confirm that the company already has that authorisation, so the planned start date remains contingent on the licensing process being completed.
- HJK CEO Aki Riihilahti framed the agreement as a long-term commercial and sporting commitment. He said the cooperation shows HJK's “unique position in Finnish sports” and that the financially and operationally significant deal gives the club room to invest more in sporting success.
- The five-and-a-half-year term is longer than the usual single-season sponsorship model, which matters for commercial planning. For a club like HJK, a commitment running through the end of 2032 gives more visibility over budgets, partner strategy and multi-season sporting priorities.
The timing is worth noting for payment and gambling groups watching Finland: the deal was announced as the country prepares to introduce a new licensing framework for parts of its gambling market. That puts the partnership squarely in the category of commercial agreements that are useful only if the regulatory box gets ticked first.
