Binance says it is financially strong after $6,300 million hack, with 95% of affected tokens restored

Binance co-CEO Richard Teng said the exchange is in “very strong financial health” after last week’s cyberattack, and that a detailed post-mortem will be published in due course. For PSPs and high-risk operators, the operational detail matters: the firm says user flows have largely normalized, withdrawals have not spiraled beyond control, and the loss was absorbed through SAFU and company funds.

  1. Speaking at Hong Kong Fintech Week on Tuesday, Teng said hourly inflows and outflows had “practically normalized” after the attack, in which $6,300 million was stolen. He said 95% of the affected tokens had been restored, while the remaining 5% were lower-liquidity assets.
  2. Teng said the losses were covered by the User Secure Asset Fund (SAFU), an emergency reserve, together with other company funds earmarked for this purpose. Binance is also working with over-the-counter (OTC) providers to recover the lower-liquidity assets that were not yet restored.
  3. Binance said clients had withdrawn a net $4,720 million by Monday, roughly 3% of assets on the platform. The exchange said most of those withdrawals were in Tether’s USDT stablecoin, a sign, according to analysts cited by the company, that user confidence held up relatively well.
  4. The FBI said over the weekend that North Korea was responsible for stealing more than $6,000 million in crypto assets, while North Korea rejected the accusation as “absurd rhetoric.” According to blockchain records, most of the theft took place over about 20 minutes, starting shortly after 20:00 GMT on Thursday.
  5. Binance says it has more than 335 million users worldwide and an average daily trading volume of $95,000 million in digital assets and derivatives. Teng said the company would publish a detailed analysis of the incident later.
