Altenar joins IBIA as Africa’s sports betting market heads toward US$19.4bn GGR by 2030

Altenar has partnered with the International Betting Integrity Association (IBIA) to strengthen betting integrity standards across African markets that are expanding fast and, in practice, getting more digital by the month. For sportsbooks, PSPs, and acquirers active in the region, this is the part of market growth that matters: monitoring, alerts, and cross-border coordination.

  1. According to IBIA’s 2025 Sports Betting Integrity Report, based on H2 Gambling Capital data, total GGR across Africa is projected to grow from US$3.5bn in 2021 to US$19.4bn by 2030, with online betting expected to reach US$16.4bn.
  2. GeoPoll’s 2026 research across Ghana, Kenya, Nigeria, South Africa, Tanzania and Uganda found that 95 per cent of bettors place their bets via mobile devices, while 67 per cent primarily bet on football. So the market is not just growing; it is already mobile-first.
  3. IBIA says its membership represents more than 90 companies and 200 betting brands. Its Global Monitoring & Alert Platform monitors more than 1.5 million sporting events across 80+ sports and analyses customer activity across more than US$300bn in global betting turnover each year.
  4. Through monitoring, intelligence-sharing and collaboration with operators, regulators and sporting organisations, IBIA provides a layer of protection for regulated betting markets. That matters more as markets become increasingly connected, because integrity issues rarely stay inside one jurisdiction for long.
  5. For Altenar, the partnership means access to a wider network of betting operators and industry stakeholders focused on identifying and addressing integrity risks, while it continues to expand its sportsbook offering across African markets with local market knowledge, localisation capabilities and support for different regulatory and commercial requirements.

For high-risk operators, the practical takeaway is straightforward: Africa is moving from growth story to regulated digital betting ecosystem, and integrity infrastructure is becoming part of the commercial stack, not an afterthought.
