One in eight Argentine teenagers who bet has debt, as online gambling scrutiny intensifies

Online betting has become part of the daily backdrop for Argentine teenagers — on match screens, in welcome bonuses, and even on shirts worn by kids. The issue for PSPs and operators is not just exposure: according to data cited by analyst María Migliore, minors are getting in through third-party profiles, cash desks, operators, and unauthorized sites, while the illegal market makes age checks and money tracing much harder.

1. According to a survey by Sedronar, Argentina’s Secretariat of Comprehensive Drug Policies, 26% of secondary school students bet money in the last year. Of that group, 20% did so online, more than 60% played casino games, 36% chose sports betting, and 26% played cards.
2. Migliore said 12- to 17-year-olds are entering through third-party accounts, cash desks, operators, or sites without authorization. In her words, the sales funnel is already built before any age filter has a chance to work: promotions, welcome bonuses, social media ads, apps, and sports broadcasts keep pushing the product into view.
3. She also said that 24% of young people bet at some point in that age range, and that one in eight teenagers who ever bet has debt. She linked that to anxiety and compulsive gambling, arguing that prevention cannot be limited to telling teenagers not to play.
4. The biggest operational problem, in her view, is the illegal market. Migliore estimated that “80% of the market is in illegal operators,” which makes age verification and money tracing far more difficult — exactly the sort of environment where compliance controls on paper are one thing and actual payment flows are another.
