Argentina’s betting tax haul rose 27.8% in July as World Cup traffic pushed online gambling higher

Argentina’s betting tax haul rose 27.8% in July as World Cup traffic pushed online gambling higher

Argentina’s ARCA collected about $17.8 billion from the indirect tax on online betting and games in July, up 27.8% month on month in real terms. For PSPs and operators, the useful part is not the headline number itself, but the direction: the tax take is accelerating, and the government has already tightened the rules around authorized digital operators.

  1. According to official ARCA data shared by Analytica, July collections reached $17.798 billion, or $8948 million more than in the same month of 2025. On a yearly basis, that was a 50.5% increase, while the first seven months of the year were up 40% year on year, at $89.627 billion.
  2. Claudio Caprarulo, director of Analytica, told LA NACION that this was “the highest monthly jump since records began.” He linked part of the increase to the World Cup held in July, which likely pushed more people to place bets through digital channels. He also said the trend was already rising before the tournament, with digital adoption, heavier advertising and socioeconomic pressure all feeding demand.
  3. The tax is still a small slice of the overall state take, but it is no longer a rounding error. In July, total tax revenue in Argentina reached $22.965.441 million, so betting and online gambling taxes were a narrow line item inside a much larger fiscal machine. For payment providers, that matters because the flow is now big enough to attract closer scrutiny without changing the basic economics of the vertical.
  4. The levy was created at the end of 2016 under law 27.346 and applies to bets and games made in the country through digital platforms and electronic devices. The general rate is 5% on the net value of deposits made by the bettor, although the bettor can request a refund of the tax.
  5. In November 2025, the government updated the withholding regime for online betting taxes, adding new rules for the registration and oversight of authorized digital operators. The point was to organize the operator registry, the control process and the moment when the tax rates start applying. In practice, that gives more predictability to tax collection and strengthens identification and supervision of platforms, especially those based abroad.

There is also a demand signal here that PSPs should not ignore: during the Argentina–Spain World Cup final, digital searches for betting platforms reportedly jumped 6200% in the country, based on Google Trends data used by the Buenos Aires provincial Ombudsman’s Observatory on Addictions and Problematic Consumption. That is not a compliance memo, but it is a reminder that tournament-driven spikes in acquisition, traffic and payment volume can arrive very fast.
