Turkey blocks 1,200 bank accounts in crackdown on illegal betting ahead of Beşiktaş–Fenerbahçe derby
Istanbul prosecutors coordinated an operation aimed at illegal betting before the Beşiktaş–Fenerbahçe derby, and the cybercrime unit of the gendarmerie says it uncovered a large betting infrastructure. For PSPs, acquirers, and banks, the useful part is not the football drama: it is the scale of the network and the fact that Turkish authorities are willing to hit payment rails, bank accounts, and affiliate structures in one move.
- The operation identified 345 illegal betting sites, 110 payment gateways, 1,200 bank accounts, and 98,000 affiliate sites. The same case also names 1,048 individuals and legal entities suspected of laundering proceeds.
- Turkey’s legal framework is simple on paper: only state betting and lotteries are legal, while everything else is illegal. In practice, the source says widespread violations continue anyway, which is exactly why payment flows remain the pressure point in enforcement actions.
- The case is not limited to one domestic network. The source describes a cross-border structure with 56 bookmaker platforms, 14 million accounts, and turnover of around 4.5 billion euro. Authorities also say 57 suspects face sentences of up to 39 years in prison.
- Turkey’s football ecosystem is already under scrutiny. A 2025 investigation reportedly found that out of 571 referees in the professional leagues, only 200 did not have betting accounts. The source also says 17 club executives were detained in July on suspicion of links to illegal betting.
- The operational lesson for high-risk payment businesses is straightforward: even if a merchant can technically process Turkey-related traffic, the combination of sports events, affiliate-heavy acquisition, and bank-account sweeps makes the exposure hard to contain once enforcement begins. For banks, pre-event monitoring is not a nice-to-have here; it is part of the threat model.
