US Treasury adds four Iran-based crypto exchanges to sanctions list, says Nobitex handled over half of Iran’s 2025 digital asset transactions

The US Treasury has expanded its sanctions list to include four cryptocurrency exchanges registered in Iran. For high-risk payment teams, the useful part is not the headline number of entities; it is the Treasury’s claim that one of them, Nobitex, sat in the middle of more than half of Iran’s digital asset activity in 2025.

  1. The Treasury said four crypto exchanges registered in Iran were added to the sanctions list. The action was announced in a statement from the US department.
  2. According to the Treasury, more than half of all Iran’s digital asset transactions in 2025 ran through Nobitex. The department also said those transactions included activity linked to the country’s Central Bank and the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC).
  3. Four Iranian citizens were also sanctioned. The Treasury identified them as the founders and executives of the crypto exchange.
