Russian bookmakers’ sponsorship and advertising spend fell 15–20% from January to September as the market braces for a 10–15% drop in 2027

Russian bookmakers are already pulling back on sponsorship and advertising, with spend down 15–20% from January to September, according to Pari, which ranks fourth in RBC’s bookmaker ratings. For PSPs and acquiring partners serving betting, the more important signal is that the legal market is being squeezed by financing costs, inflation, and tighter cash conditions before any broader contraction shows up in transaction volumes.

  1. Pari said sponsorship programs and advertising activity fell 15–20% in the January–September period. That matters because sponsorship is one of the clearest discretionary expense lines in betting, so a cut there usually means operators are protecting margin rather than betting on top-line growth.
  2. At the “Gambling: Sports Contributions” forum, Pari executive director Evgeny Lugovsky said the bookmaker market fell 1.5% in the first five months of 2026, and could shrink by 10–15% in 2027. He also said one to three legal-sector bookmakers could close in 2027.
  3. Lugovsky pointed to higher loan rates, limited money supply in the economy, and inflation as the main pressure points this year. He said the betting market will not end 2026 in the black, but expects it to return to 20–40% year-on-year growth over the next three to four years, partly because Russian clubs and national teams are expected to return to the international stage.
  4. Russian bookmakers spent 22.6 billion rubles on sponsorship contracts in 2025, up by 5 billion rubles year on year, according to Vedomosti. About 70% of that spend went to Fonbet and Winline, which tells you how concentrated sponsor money is in the market even before the contraction starts biting.
  5. Alexey Grachev, CEO of the Unified Gambling Regulator (ERAI), said betting contributions to sports totaled 38 billion rubles in 2025 and could reach about 40 billion rubles in 2026. ERAI declined to comment.

For payments players, the practical takeaway is simple: Russian betting is not moving in a straight line toward growth. If sponsorship budgets are already being trimmed and legal operators are talking about closures, the next phase is usually sharper vendor scrutiny, tighter merchant risk policies, and more pressure on payment terms.
