Brazil ministry asks for takedown of 5,209 betting domains as ANJL says 6,401 illegal sites appeared in a week
Brazil’s Ministry of Justice and Public Security said it requested the takedown of 5,209 betting domains on Tuesday (29), but did not say how many were actually removed. For PSPs and acquiring teams, the useful part is not the request count; it is the speed with which new domains keep replacing the old ones.
- The Ministry said the Agência Nacional de Telecomunicações (Anatel) ordered the takedown of 45.8% of the 5,209 domains, or 2,387. The ministry did not tell the press how many of those domains were effectively blocked.
- Legitbet, the ANJL’s illegal-betting monitoring platform, said it identified 894 new illegal sites on Monday (28) alone. Over the last seven days, its daily average was 914 new illegal sites.
- The platform also said that on the Sunday after the MP was issued, the number of new addresses reached 3,094, around 67 times the number recorded on the previous Sunday. In other words: enforcement action is moving, but domain churn is moving faster.
- According to Legitbet, between September 22 and 28, 6,401 new illegal betting sites were confirmed, along with 811 links to those platforms found in channels monitored by the ANJL.
- Plínio Lemos Jorge, president of the ANJL, said the government’s public position remains the same when asked how many of the 5,209 sites were actually blocked: the request was made, but no concrete completion number was provided. His point, stripped of the rhetoric, is that takedown requests alone do not equal takedowns.
ANJL, launched in March 2023, says it represents the interests of its members and the broader betting sector, with a stated focus on responsible and secure betting. For high-risk operators and their payment partners, Brazil’s latest numbers are a reminder that domain-blocking campaigns can be noisy, partial, and quickly outpaced by new URLs.
