Ex-São Paulo midfielder Jonatan Gómez says gambling debt reached $50,000 and he faced threats over $500,000 casino debt

Ex-São Paulo midfielder Jonatan Gómez says gambling debt reached $50,000 and he faced threats over $500,000 casino debt

Former São Paulo player Jonatan Gómez has described a gambling addiction that left him with a $50,000 debt from betting on an illegal platform, plus separate collection pressure and extortion tied to a $500,000 obligation connected to offshore online casino activity. For PSPs and operators in high-risk verticals, the point is straightforward: the mechanics of clandestine gambling can quickly spill into debt collection, coercion, and legal exposure.

  1. Speaking on MargaTV, Gómez said he had accumulated a $50,000 debt, about R$ 300,000, while betting on a clandestine platform. He said: “I lost everything. Today I lost everything,” and described his family as “practically destroyed.”
  2. Gómez said he has been “clean” from betting addiction for four months and is under constant medical follow-up. He also described changes in behavior associated with the addiction, including anger, mood swings, and distancing from his children.
  3. In February, he said he had to file a lawsuit after receiving collections demands and suffering extortion related to a half-million-dollar debt, about R$ 3 million, linked to operations he carried out on an illegal online casino platform. According to Gómez, he was even taken by force to a notary office to sign documents under threat.
  4. The football background matters because it shows how exposure to gambling products can cross from entertainment into personal and legal crisis. Gómez played for São Paulo from 2017 to 2020, made 15 appearances, had loan spells including CSA and a club in Saudi Arabia, then later played for Sport Recife, Argentinos Juniors, Racing, Rosario Central, and Sarmiento de Junín.

For high-risk operators and their payment partners, the useful takeaway is not the celebrity angle. It is that illegal gambling channels create a trail of debt, charge disputes, and enforcement risk that sits well outside normal merchant underwriting. When the money flow starts looking like coercion, the compliance problem has already moved beyond payments.
