Western Union and Rain launch Stablecard backed by USDPT stablecoin

Western Union is adding a Visa secured credit card and digital wallet through Rain, using its own stablecoin, USDPT, as the settlement layer. For PSPs and remittance players, the point is simple: Western Union is trying to keep value inside its network for longer, instead of forcing an immediate trip through fiat.

  1. Western Union and Rain are launching Stablecard, a digital wallet and Visa secured credit card backed by Western Union’s stablecoin, the U.S. Dollar Payment Token, or USDPT. The product gives customers a place to receive dollar-denominated stablecoin and then spend it wherever Visa is accepted.
  2. The card is meant to remove one of the usual pain points in stablecoin remittances: conversion to fiat before the money becomes spendable. In this setup, users can hold dollars in the wallet and spend the same balance without worrying about an extra off-ramp step.
  3. USDPT is issued by Anchorage Digital Bank, custodied by U.S. Bank, and runs on the Solana network. That matters because Western Union is not just experimenting with a token; it is tying the product to regulated banking and an established chain.
  4. The two companies already worked together last year on the Digital Asset Network, Western Union’s off-ramp product. Rain co-founder and CEO Farooq Malik said the new card makes Western Union’s stablecoin usable in the real world, and that customers can receive a transfer, hold it in dollars, and spend it the same day.
  5. Western Union President and CEO Devin McGranahan said in a statement that Stablecard is “the next step in making global financial services more accessible” to customers. In parallel, analyst Cristopher Kennedy of William Blair said the biggest hurdle for stablecoin adoption in cross-border remittances is the on- and off-ramping of funds into spendable fiat currency.

For high-risk operators and their payment partners, this is the broader pattern worth watching: remittance brands are using stablecoins not just as a transfer rail, but as a way to extend customer lifetime value inside their own ecosystem. Western Union still has retail locations for cash pickup, but the card gives it a second exit path that does not require a branch visit.
