Brazil bans iGaming payments through Pix, TED, and boleto

Brazil has now pushed its gambling restrictions into payment rails themselves. Banks and payment institutions must block and reject transfers to betting operators via Pix, TED, and boleto, which makes the payment check a problem for both acquiring and deposit conversion, not just for domains and mirrors.

  1. The rule applies to transfers routed to operators of bets through Pix, TED, and boleto. In other words, the payment system is now part of the enforcement layer, and banks and PSPs are required to filter those routes automatically.
  2. The control is not limited to websites. The mechanism also covers the operator’s CNPJ and payment details, so a transfer can be rejected at the moment it is sent if the recipient is linked to gambling.
  3. That changes the old workaround. If an operator lost its main domain, it could move to a mirror and keep taking deposits through a new QR code. Now the issue is not the domain itself, but whether the payment credential passes if it is tied to gambling.
  4. For operators already active in Brazil, and for those just entering the market, this hits deposit conversion directly. The source says the payment blocks may matter more than pressure on owners and local teams, and if the restrictions stay in place, continuing to operate in Brazil could become critically unprofitable by the end of the current month.

For high-risk PSPs, the practical lesson is simple: Brazil is no longer just a market where gambling compliance sits at the edge of onboarding and merchant monitoring. Pix in Brazil is used on a mass scale, and when the rail itself is instructed to reject gambling-related transfers, the usual “just switch the domain” playbook stops working.
