Singapore police arrest 60 people in illegal gambling sweeps during the FIFA World Cup 2026 period
Singapore police said they arrested 60 people in operations carried out between May 1 and July 20, 2026, with enforcement running ahead of and during the FIFA World Cup in June and July. For PSPs, the part to watch is the money trail: authorities said they tracked more than 6,900 banking transactions and blocked more than $600,000 tied to illegal gambling activity.
- Police said the crackdown covered both physical and digital activity, with more than 600 websites, mobile applications and social media posts blocked by the competent authorities during the period. That matters for operators because the enforcement is not limited to storefront gambling; it reaches the distribution layer where traffic and payments meet.
- Of the 60 people arrested, 46 were men and 14 were women, aged between 17 and 79. The operations were conducted with help from the Ministry of Home Affairs and the Ministry of Social and Family Development.
- Police also named 11 individuals in a separate illegal online gambling investigation involving bank account misuse. That is the part payment teams will recognise instantly: once account misuse is in the picture, banks and PSPs are usually looking at whether the funds are being routed through nominees, mule accounts, or other thinly disguised payment paths.
- The authorities said the campaign focused on identifying key figures in illegal gambling operations by tracking money streams. In practice, that is a reminder that high-volume transaction monitoring is not just a compliance box-tick; it is often the only way regulators and police can connect the dots across websites, apps, social posts, and settlement flows.
Singapore’s enforcement approach here is straightforward: block the distribution channels, trace the payments, and make the banking layer part of the investigation. For high-risk merchants and their PSPs, that usually means the risk is not just the gambling product itself, but any setup that makes it easier to move money into or out of it.
