Brazilian police carried out 3 search and seizure warrants in Bangu, in Rio’s West Zone, as part of an investigation into alleged match manipulation tied to sports betting. For PSPs and operators, the detail that matters is the mechanism: investigators say the case involved a deliberate yellow card, the sort of in-play incident that feeds micro-betting markets.
According to the Civil Police, Luiz Gustavo is being investigated for allegedly helping third parties by deliberately receiving a yellow card during the Portuguesa vs. Nova Iguaçu match in February, at the Luso-Brasileiro stadium, in the 6th round of the competition’s first phase. The match ended Portuguesa 1-0 Nova Iguaçu.
Police say the booking was allegedly arranged to benefit bettors on sports betting platforms. In practice, that points to a specific integrity risk for operators offering live markets on cards, fouls and corners, where a single event can move the book.
During the warrant execution, agents seized materials that will be analyzed to identify the people involved and whether there were other participants in the scheme. Luiz Gustavo was taken to the specialized unit to give testimony, while a second athlete under the same inquiry was not located.
The Civil Police said the investigation continues to identify other people involved and clarify each suspect’s role in the alleged match-fixing and money laundering scheme.
The player had already been named in another State championship-related case. In June, the Rio de Janeiro Sports Court of Justice (TJD-RJ) suspended Luiz Gustavo for 365 days after finding that he had acted deliberately to harm his own team. In the same decision, defender Sidão of Nova Iguaçu was also punished, and the ruling is still subject to appeal. The judgment also fined two other Portuguesa officials: president Marcelo Gonçalves and supervisor and former player Muniz, both at R$ 5,000 under article 220-A, which covers obstruction, omission or lack of cooperation with Sports Justice.
