Marqeta and Coinbase add stablecoin-backed cards for enterprise customers

Marqeta’s enterprise clients can now offer cards backed by stablecoin balances through Coinbase, a move that turns digital dollars into something cardholders can actually spend at merchants that accept cards. For PSPs and issuers, the important bit is less the branding and more the plumbing: Coinbase is taking custody and conversion, while Marqeta stays on issuing, processing, and network integration.

  1. According to a Friday, Oct. 16 press release, Marqeta’s enterprise customers can now offer stablecoin-backed cards powered by Coinbase. The setup is meant to let users spend stablecoin balances at any merchant that accepts cards, which is the usual test for whether “crypto payments” are a product or just a demo.
  2. The companies said the new collaboration combines Marqeta’s card issuing platform with Coinbase’s infrastructure. Coinbase will handle custody of stablecoin balances and the conversion between digital assets and fiat, while Coinbase’s blockchain, Base, will provide the on-chain infrastructure for settlement.
  3. Marqeta will handle card issuance, payment processing, and bank and network relationships. That division of labor matters for high-risk operators because it shows where the regulated card stack still sits: the wallet and conversion layer may be on-chain, but the card program still depends on issuer, processor, bank, and network rails.
  4. Marqeta Chief Strategy Officer Anthony Peculic said expanding the relationship with Coinbase was “a natural next step” as the company builds “the complete stack for stablecoin-backed cards.” Coinbase Head of Infrastructure Products Alec Lovett said the collaboration is meant to deliver “real-time global transactions” for consumers and businesses.
  5. This is an expansion of an existing relationship under which Marqeta works with Coinbase to issue crypto-backed cards. Marqeta CEO Mike Milotich also described stablecoin-backed cards as part of the company’s broader strategy alongside embedded finance, multinational issuing and commercial payments, saying the goal is “to make digital dollars spendable through the same trusted card rails our customers and users already utilize on a daily basis.”

For the market, the signal is clear enough: Coinbase is trying to make stablecoin payments a revenue line, and Marqeta is positioning itself as the issuing layer that can move those balances onto existing card rails without asking merchants to change anything. That is the kind of setup PSPs and partner banks can actually underwrite, because the merchant acceptance side stays familiar even if the value transfer starts elsewhere.
