Santos suspends betting sponsorship and looks for short-term deals as Brazil bans ads from October 6
The club has paused its agreement with a betting company rather than risk losing its master sponsor altogether. For PSPs and other high-risk payment providers, the key detail is simple: when a jurisdiction moves from tolerance to prohibition, the commercial layer gets messy fast.
- Santos chose suspension over a full break, saying it did not want to lose its main sponsor. The club is trying to reach an immediate resolution while the issue is still moving through the political process, and it does not want to keep the sponsor on a deal it can no longer perform.
- Even before the formal deadline, Santos decided not to display the company’s brand in the match against São Paulo on October 2 at Morumbis, in the Brasileirão. The reason is straightforward: once betting advertising is banned, the club cannot deliver the contractual obligations it agreed to.
- With the agreement on hold, Santos is now looking for new revenue, starting with short-term sponsorships to fill the gap. In other words, the club is not just replacing a logo; it is trying to patch a cash-flow hole created by the regulatory change.
- The Federal Government announced the suspension of betting activity in Brazil during an event on Friday. The announcement was made by Finance Minister Dario Durigan together with President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva and other ministers.
- Under the suspension, betting operators must return balances to bettors by 11:59 pm on October 5. From October 6, websites and apps will go offline, and betting operations will be prohibited. New deposits into betting accounts were already banned from the previous Friday, after the publication of the Provisional Measure.
President Lula also signed a bill to be sent to the National Congress that defines concepts and classifies crimes related to fixed-odds betting, the so-called bets. For the market, that means Brazil is not just tightening rules around advertising; it is moving to rewrite the legal framework around the product itself.
