EBANX Partners with OPay to Bring Subscription Billing to Nigeria via Digital Wallet Direct Debit
EBANX has partnered with Nigeria’s digital bank OPay to integrate OPay Direct Debit at checkout, making it the first global business to use the wallet for subscription payments. For PSPs and merchants selling recurring services into Nigeria, the point is simple: card-on-file is not the main rail here.
- EBANX will plug OPay Direct Debit into its checkout so global subscription businesses can charge customers in Nigeria through a mobile wallet rather than a traditional card setup. The tool ties recurring transactions to the wallet, and users only need to authorise it once in-app.
- Nigeria is Africa’s largest e-commerce market, with a current market size of $30 billion. EBANX says digital wallets and bank transfers together account for 65% of the country’s large e-commerce volume, which is the relevant number if you are deciding whether a subscription stack can live there without card dependence.
- The local card base is thin: only 5% of people use credit cards, while 84% of Nigerians have mobile phones. OPay’s wallet has 40 million monthly active users in Nigeria, roughly one-third of the country’s total population.
- EBANX chief product officer Eduardo de Abreu said the gap creates “a significant opportunity” for global merchants to expand recurring payment coverage beyond traditional card-on-file models. OPay chief commercial officer Elizabeth Wang said the partnership will give Nigerians a way to pay for global digital services “from streaming platforms to online tools” while keeping control of their subscriptions.
- This is not EBANX’s first recurring-payment play in an emerging market. Earlier this year, it struck a similar deal with South Africa’s Canva and now offers recurring alternative payment solutions in 13 emerging markets across Asia, Africa, and Latin America.
