Digital identity is becoming the new frontier for online gaming in Europe
Europe is building a digital identity stack that could let users prove who they are, and whether they meet age or other eligibility requirements, without handing over more data than necessary. For online gaming, that matters because identity and age checks are not a side process; they are part of the payment and onboarding flow.
- The European Union is pushing ahead with a digital identity ecosystem built around verifiable credentials, remote authentication, and new security tools. The goal is to reduce friction without lowering security or data-protection standards, which is exactly the balance PSPs and gaming operators keep getting asked to strike.
- The core piece is the European Digital Identity Wallet. Under the EU framework, Member States must make at least one free digital identity wallet available to residents by the end of 2026. These wallets will let citizens store official credentials on their mobile devices and share only the information needed for a specific transaction.
- In practice, that means fewer passport uploads, fewer document photos, and fewer repeated checks every time a user moves between platforms. The article describes this as a shift away from the current “friction” model, where the user keeps proving the same thing over and over again.
- The change is not just about speed. It is about data minimization: a platform subject to age restrictions could receive a verifiable proof that a user meets the required condition without seeing the full identity document. For high-risk verticals, that is the difference between collecting everything and collecting only what the rule actually requires.
For online gaming operators and their payment partners, the useful part is obvious: if this standard takes hold, KYC, age verification, and access control can become more interoperable across markets in Europe. The annoying part, as usual, is implementation — but the direction of travel is clear enough that payment and compliance teams should already be planning for it.
