SOFTSWISS Sportsbook Sees 3x Activity Surge During FIFA World Cup 2026

SOFTSWISS says betting activity on its Sportsbook platform tripled during the FIFA World Cup 2026, with the tournament also bringing in more casino-only players and shifting the mix toward pre-match betting. For operators and PSPs, the useful bit is not the football trivia: major events can change product mix, channel split, and risk profile all at once.

  1. According to preliminary estimates, approximately 210 billion dollars were wagered on the tournament worldwide, around twice the volume recorded during the 2022 FIFA World Cup. SOFTSWISS analysed its own betting data across the event and found a threefold increase in activity on its Sportsbook platform.
  2. The tournament changed the usual bet mix in a very visible way. Under standard conditions, approximately 80% of activity on the SOFTSWISS Sportsbook comes from live betting, with pre-match accounting for the remaining 20%. During the World Cup, pre-match turnover rose to 57% of total activity. SOFTSWISS also said pre-match betting generated approximately 20% higher margin than live betting, while live betting kept higher average stakes.
  3. The event also widened the player base. Up to 20% of players who typically use only casino products placed their first sports bet during the tournament. That matters commercially because the World Cup did not just lift sportsbook turnover; it pulled some casino traffic into sports wagering as well.
  4. The final between Spain and Argentina was the highest-volume match of the competition, with the largest player count and the highest bet volume of any fixture. Nearly 70% of bets on that game were placed pre-match. The third-place fixture also ranked among the highest-volume matches.
  5. Mobile remained the main channel, accounting for 85% of bets, down slightly from the usual 90% share. Desktop contributed 15%, while tablet users represented only a small share of activity.

Alexander Kamenetskyi, Head of Operations at SOFTSWISS Sportsbook, said the operators that performed best started months earlier by building promotional calendars, stress-testing trading and risk management setups, and aligning teams before kickoff. In practice, that is the part PSPs and sportsbooks cannot fake in week 1: when event traffic spikes, platform stability becomes part of the commercial offer.
