Mastercard launches stablecoin risk screening for banks and payment providers

Mastercard is adding stablecoin transfers to its existing payment risk stack, giving banks and payment providers a way to flag suspicious activity before funds move onchain. That matters because once value is spread across wallets and blockchains, recovering stolen funds gets a lot more complicated than in ordinary card payments.

  1. Mastercard unveiled Stablecoin Security on Monday at the Money20/20 USA conference. The tool combines traditional payment data with blockchain analytics to identify fraud, scams, sanctions exposure, and other financial crime risks before a payment is completed.
  2. The company said the system can generate a risk score before settlement, so banks can review transactions that need extra scrutiny. In practice, that is the stablecoin version of a familiar card-network problem: catch the bad transfer before the money is gone and the chain starts doing what chains do.
  3. Borderless.xyz and Keyrails are the initial partners. Mastercard said global commercial availability is expected next year.
  4. The launch follows Mastercard’s $1.8 billion acquisition of BVNK in August and its recent announcement of a Global Money Platform designed to bring stablecoin payments to businesses.
  5. The backdrop is mixed: Mastercard said growth in the supply of digital dollars has slowed significantly this year, even as transaction volumes have accelerated, helped in part by remittances and cross-border payments. A recent Standard Chartered report suggests the stablecoin market could reach $2 trillion by 2030, two years later than its initial forecast.
