Telegram begins rolling out Gram Wallet, a non-custodial crypto wallet for more than 1 billion users
Pavel Durov said Telegram has started rolling out Gram Wallet, a non-custodial crypto wallet built directly into the app. The feature is already available to a test group and will be expanded to Telegram’s audience of more than 1 billion people in the coming weeks.
- Gram Wallet is non-custodial, which means private keys stay with users rather than with Telegram or any third-party service. For PSPs and wallet operators, that is the entire point: it changes the user experience from “sign up for another crypto product” to “it is already in the app they use all day.”
- Durov described the rollout as the largest deployment of a non-custodial wallet in history. That is a scale statement, not a technical one, but the underlying commercial point is clear: a messenger with 1 billion+ users can move crypto onboarding from a separate product journey into a native feature.
- The new architecture is designed so the wallet can be upgraded without forcing users to move funds to new addresses. In practice, that matters because address migrations are one of those small operational details that can become a mess when a product grows fast.
- The interface is built for people with no prior crypto experience, and P2P transfers between Telegram users are fee-free. For high-risk operators, the catch is simple: convenience inside a familiar app is exactly what tends to pull volume away from centralized exchanges and custodial wallets.
- The rollout also strengthens the TON ecosystem by creating a more closed payment loop inside Telegram. On paper this is a wallet launch; in practice it is another distribution layer for crypto payments sitting inside a messenger with huge reach.
The thing about a Telegram-native wallet is that it does not need to educate users from scratch. It just needs to make the first transaction easy enough to happen before the user thinks about going elsewhere.
