Former Prospect Park Councilman Anand Shah Pleads Guilty in New Jersey Illegal Gambling Case

Anand Shah, a former Prospect Park councilman in New Jersey, has pleaded guilty to racketeering, money laundering, and official misconduct after prosecutors said he helped run an illegal gambling operation tied to the Lucchese crime family. For high-risk operators, the interesting part is the mechanism: sportsbook-style betting, poker, cash flow, and political cover all sitting in the same file.

  1. Shah was banned from holding public office and resigned after his plea deal became public. He now awaits sentencing and faces up to 10 years behind bars, with prosecutors recommending the maximum sentence.
  2. According to New Jersey Attorney General Jennifer Davenport, the 44-year-old politician acted as a sportsbook agent and poker manager in a gambling ring that operated across Morris, Passaic, and Bergen counties and used restaurants as fronts.
  3. The scheme allegedly ran for almost six years, from January 2017 to August 2023. Prosecutors said Shah generated nearly $1 million in proceeds, including a profit of $900,084 from taking a cut known as rake in a poker parlor.
  4. The complaint also says Shah used his poker-game influence to fund his campaign, and that people who owed him money over poker were let off the hook if they contributed to his political campaign instead. In other words: the betting book and the campaign ledger were not kept particularly separate.
  5. Investigators said the criminal ring hid as much as $4.79 million in ill-gotten proceeds. Theresa L. Hilton, director of the NJ Division of Criminal Justice, said illegal gambling rings continue to operate in backrooms and online even with legal gambling options available, and that law enforcement will keep dismantling them.
