Flamengo and Fluminense Wear “Prohibition Is Not Protection” in Brazil’s Sunday Derby

The two Rio clubs will put the message on their shirts in Sunday’s 11/10 Brasileirão match at 17:30, in a coordinated protest against a provisional measure that suspends betting activity in Brazil. For high-risk PSPs, the point is straightforward: this is not just a football story, it is a live signal about where Brazil’s regulated betting market is heading.

  1. According to Globo Online, the initiative came from the clubs’ main sponsors: Superbet, which sponsors Fluminense, and Betano, Flamengo’s partner. In practice, that means the commercial side of the sector is already shaping the public response to the measure.
  2. Fluminense president Mattheus Montenegro said in an interview with FluTV that regulation is the way to control betting activity and protect people suffering from ludopathy or at risk of it. He contrasted that with unregulated sites, which he said operate without paying an authorization fee, collecting taxes, or submitting to any type of control.
  3. The campaign is being financed by the Instituto Brasileiro de Jogo Responsável (IBJR), the Associação Nacional de Jogos e Loterias – ANJL, and clubs sponsored by betting platforms, including Flamengo and Fluminense. After the government issued the provisional measure, advertising boards at recent Série A matches have already carried messages opposing it.
  4. After Sunday’s derby, Fluminense will return to displaying Superscore, a global partner of Superbet, on its shirt. That detail matters because it shows how tightly shirt sponsorship, matchday messaging, and betting-brand visibility are now tied together in Brazil.
