US leagues and player unions ask for lifetime sportsbook bans on bettors who threaten athletes

Major US sports leagues and their player unions want legal sportsbooks to permanently exclude users who harass or threaten athletes, coaches, referees, team staff, and family members. For regulated operators, the point is simple: if abusive behavior starts inside the betting account, the response should not end with a warning email and a shrug.

1. The proposal was sent to the 35 states and the District of Columbia, according to ESPN. The leagues want a shared exclusion list and fast procedures for sending complaints and evidence to regulators and law enforcement.
2. The NFL, the NBA, Major League Baseball, the NHL, and Major League Soccer signed the letter together with their respective players’ unions. They asked operators to identify accounts used for abuse or threats of violence and block them permanently.
3. The request is aimed at stopping a person who threatens a player, coach, referee, sports employee, or family member after a lost bet from simply moving to another jurisdiction and betting again. In other words, the leagues want the punishment to follow the bettor across state lines, not just across sportsbook brands.
4. The letter also asks sportsbooks to actively monitor user behavior. The coverage would extend beyond professionals to amateur athletes and coaches, plus referees and other club-related personnel.
5. Five jurisdictions already have restrictions of this kind in place: Louisiana, Massachusetts, Ohio, West Virginia, and Wyoming. The leagues want those rules expanded through compatible standards across state markets.

The backdrop matters for anyone running payments or risk in regulated betting. Since the US Supreme Court opened the door to sports betting in 2018, the leagues say complaints about insults, intimidating messages, and harassment against players and families have increased alongside the market itself.
