Stake confirms ambition to enter New Zealand’s newly regulated online casino market

Stake has said it wants into New Zealand’s newly regulated online casino market, with licences not yet granted and launch expected from 2027. For PSPs, acquirers, and banks, the useful detail is simple: another high-risk operator is lining up for a fresh regulated market, and the licensing clock has not started running to completion yet.

  1. Stake, which describes itself as the world’s largest online casino and sportsbook, is among the handful of operators that have progressed through New Zealand’s licence auction process. That gives the company the chance to apply for a licence under the new framework, but it is not the same as having a licence in hand.
  2. New Zealand’s online casino market is expected to launch from 2027, subject to completion of the licensing process and regulatory approvals. In other words, the market is moving toward regulation, but the operational go-live still depends on the usual paperwork, approvals, and timing.
  3. A Stake spokesperson said the company sees New Zealand as “a strong fit” and “another important step” in its global expansion. The spokesperson also linked the move to Stake’s expansion into Alberta, Argentina and Mexico this year, and said the company is looking forward to the next stages of the process.
  4. Stake was launched in 2017 and has grown from what the company calls an online gaming disruptor into one of the industry’s better-known brands. The company says it has combined online gaming with major sports and entertainment to build its global identity as an online sportsbook and casino.
  5. The company says further market expansion is planned during 2026. For payment providers watching the high-risk map, that means Stake is still in active market-entry mode rather than sitting on a finished jurisdiction list.
