SkillOnNet secures a Finnish gambling licence ahead of the 1 July 2027 market opening
SkillOnNet has secured a Finnish gambling licence from the National Police Board of Finland, putting it in line for entry into the country’s newly regulated online gambling market. For PSPs, acquirers and banking partners, the point is simple: Finland is moving from a mostly closed system to a licensed one, and operators are already positioning themselves before the first day of trading.
- Finland’s market opening is set for 1 July 2027, and the new framework will let approved operators offer selected betting and online casino products under licence. Until then, SkillOnNet has the approval in hand, but it cannot launch services under the Finnish licence before the system takes effect.
- The licence was granted by the National Police Board of Finland, which is handling applications during the transition to the new regulatory regime. That makes the approval a practical milestone, not a live go-ahead: the legal route is now there, but the operating window opens only when the reform does.
- The reform changes the current structure of Finnish gambling. At present, Veikkaus holds exclusive rights across a range of product categories; under the new system, selected online segments will open to licensed competition while other forms stay under exclusive arrangements.
- Veikkaus is expected to keep exclusive rights over lottery-type games, scratch cards and physical slot machines and casino games. So this is not a full liberalisation story; it is a mixed model, with competition in some digital verticals and monopoly-style control in others.
- SkillOnNet, which operates internationally and includes casino brands such as PlayOJO, is using regulatory approval as the centre of its market-entry plan. For vendors and payment providers, that is the part that matters: a licence becomes the basis for local payment routing, underwriting and compliance decisions once the market opens.
The Finnish process has attracted substantial interest from international businesses, which is what you would expect when a regulated market with online casino and betting demand finally starts issuing access rights instead of keeping the gate shut.
