Brazil’s Central Bank allows Pix Automático on salary accounts and sets new rules against duplicate payments

The Central Bank of Brazil (BC) has updated Pix rules to let Pix Automático run from salary accounts and to tighten the handling of hybrid billing so the same invoice does not get paid twice. For PSPs and acquirers touching Brazil, the important bit is not the feature list — it is the compliance and operational cleanup around recurring payments and boleto settlement.

  1. Pix Automático will be allowed on salary accounts, and it will be the only way to send Pix from that type of account. The feature is designed for recurring payments such as water, electricity, internet, school fees, and subscriptions, using a single prior authorization in the bank app.The rule takes effect on 1 July 2027.
  2. The BC also set rules for cobrança híbrida, which combines the boleto barcode and the Pix Cobrança QR code in one document. The market already uses this format; now the regulator has formalized how it should work inside the Pix framework to keep the two payment rails aligned and reduce the risk of incorrect or duplicate settlement. The hybrid billing rules apply only to Pix Cobrança with a due date. They are allowed only for standard boletos and dynamic boletos without linkage to financial assets. Proposal boletos cannot use hybrid billing, and deposit or contribution boletos are also excluded.
  3. Under the new framework, the Pix Cobrança must be canceled when the boleto is paid or when a dynamic boleto is later linked to a financial asset. The boleto issuer must be the same payment service provider as the payee’s provider, participation in the feature will be optional, and the payee’s participant must reject transactions if the boleto has already been paid or if the dynamic boleto is linked to a financial asset. If an operational failure still allows settlement, the institution must fix it using its own funds, protecting both payer and payee. The hybrid billing rules take effect on 1 February 2027.
  4. The BC also opened the door to waiving mandatory Pix participation for institutions with more than 500,000 active transactional accounts when specific characteristics of their customers or business model do not justify participation. The text in the source cuts off before the full condition is completed, but the direction is clear: the regulator is adding a carve-out mechanism instead of treating participation as automatic for every large institution.
