The Next Fraud Frontier Is the Impostor That Passes Every Check

Card theft and account takeovers are still here, but the faster-growing problem is identity fraud: criminals are using AI to create false identities and mimic voices and faces well enough to get through standard checks. For issuers and PSPs, the useful question is no longer just “does this transaction look risky?” but “does this person exist at all?”

  1. Bankrate’s 2026 survey shows how quickly the pressure is rising: financial scams hit 40% of consumers in the last year, up from 34% a year earlier, with AI cited as a major driver.
  2. UK Finance saw a sharper jump across more than 100 million accounts at nine financial institutions: scam attempts were up 62%, and phishing was up 140%.
  3. PYMNTS Intelligence found that unauthorized-party fraud — cases where someone other than the account holder initiates the transaction — now accounts for 71% of incidents and dollar losses, up from 48% a year earlier. By contrast, authorized push payment fraud does not need account compromise at all; the fraudster simply talks the victim into sending the money directly.
  4. Tim Joslyn, CTO at Paymentology, told PYMNTS Intelligence that voice authentication has already failed, leaving banks that rely on it exposed. Selfies, videos and behavioral biometrics face the same problem when automated systems learn to mimic human timing.
  5. The shift on the issuer side is toward session-by-session trust, with harder checks only when behavior turns unusual. Tokenization fits the same logic: it replaces a static card number with a credential that defines what a customer or an AI agent can use it for. PYMNTS Intelligence says 68% of high-customer-lifetime-value (CLTV) issuers already view stronger security as essential for AI agents making purchases.

For high-risk PSPs, the takeaway is simple enough: the defense has to distinguish a stolen credential from a convincing fake customer in real time. If your stack treats those as the same problem, it will keep fighting yesterday’s fraud while the next one walks straight through the front door.
