Korea police open preliminary inquiry into linked hacks at Daishin, Mirae Asset, and Bithumb
The Korean National Police Agency National Office of Investigation (NOI) has opened a preliminary inquiry after a run of hacking incidents at securities firms, asset managers, and virtual asset exchanges. For PSPs and partners in Korea, the point is not just the individual leaks; police are now looking at whether the cases are connected.
- The NOI began the preliminary inquiry on the morning of the 28th, and the team handling it has previously investigated a series of hacking cases in the financial sector. The police are expected to examine possible links between the incidents.
- Daishin Securities confirmed abnormal external access to a server tied to non-face-to-face securities account openings for discretionary investment. The company said the personal information of 38,490 customers was leaked.
- Bithumb said personal information was leaked after abnormal access by an unauthorized external party to its in-house mobile groupware system. It is still checking whether member information was also taken.
- Mirae Asset Global Investments said certain information related to some business systems was leaked, but so far there has been no leak of customers' personal information.
- Police are also investigating a separate case involving hacking at 16 financial companies, including banks, savings banks, and capital firms, where about 100,000 items of personal information were leaked.
