Bill Simmons proxy betting remark triggers Massachusetts probe into FanDuel

FanDuel has been pulled into a Massachusetts Gaming Commission probe after sports media personality Bill Simmons said on his podcast that he let his daughter’s boyfriend place bets for him through his FanDuel account while he was in California, where sports gambling is not legal. For PSPs and sportsbooks, the useful detail is not the joke; it is that a public admission can turn a routine account-use issue into a regulator-facing problem.

1. According to the Massachusetts Gaming Commission (MGC), FanDuel “specifically accepted” the proxy bets, which is why the sportsbook is now under review. FanDuel has voided the wagers.

Simmons, a California resident, said on The Bill Simmons Podcast with Joe House and Cousin Sal that he had Hank, his daughter’s boyfriend, log into his FanDuel account and place bets for him while he was in the Golden State. He said he received the code on his phone, gave it to Hank, and Hank placed the bets.
3. Because sports gambling is not legal in California, the conduct described would be illegal both because Simmons placed a wager and because he did so through a third party.
4. If the MGC takes enforcement action against FanDuel, it would be the first time the regulator has done so in relation to proxy betting. So far, the MGC has mostly targeted sportsbooks over prohibited bets.
