Turkey releases commentator Rasim Ozan Kütahyalı after 93 days in jail in betting and money laundering probe
Television commentator Rasim Ozan Kütahyalı, once a close confidant of President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, was released on Wednesday after 93 days in jail in a case that sits squarely in the overlap between illegal betting, money laundering, and payment flows. For PSPs, the detail that matters is not the celebrity name; it is the alleged routing of funds through banks, payment firms, exchange offices, gold dealers, shell companies, and cryptocurrency accounts.
- Kütahyalı had been held since May 18 at İstanbul’s Maltepe Prison. A higher court approved his lawyer’s appeal after an expert assessment on Kütahyalı’s financial transactions was added to the case file.
- He was detained in May during police operations across 228 locations in 21 different provinces. Prosecutors sought 198 individuals, and courts ordered Kütahyalı and 134 others to remain in custody pending trial.
- The investigation includes allegations of illegal betting, online fraud, bribery, money laundering, and forming a crime group. In other words, it is not a narrow betting case; it is a broader financial-crime file with multiple payment touchpoints.
- Prosecutors say the group moved funds through banks, payment firms, exchange offices, gold dealers, shell companies, and cryptocurrency accounts. That mix is exactly why these cases matter to acquiring teams and high-risk PSPs: once funds are being pushed through several layers, transaction monitoring and source-of-funds review stop being box-ticking exercises.
- Turkey’s Financial Crimes Investigation Board (MASAK) flagged millions of lira moving through Kütahyalı’s accounts. He denied wrongdoing and said the payments came from debts.
