Spain to impose nationwide deposit limits for online gambling players from spring 2027
Spain’s Consumer Affairs ministry and the Directorate General for Gambling Regulation (DGOJ) have launched a player self-assessment portal and set out a national “joint limits” system that will cap deposits across all authorised online gambling operators. For PSPs and operators, the important bit is simple: deposit control is moving from site-by-site settings to a player-level rulebook.
- From spring 2027, Spain will apply default deposit caps aggregated at the player level across all sanctioned online gambling operators, regardless of platform. The limits are set at €700 ($783) per day, €1,750 per week and €3,300 per four-week period.
- The caps will be cumulative across every authorised operator, replacing the previous model where each site set its own separate limit. The regulator’s stated aim is to close a loophole that let players spread deposits across multiple platforms and bypass intended safeguards.
- The DGOJ, which sits under the Ministry of Social Rights, Consumer Affairs and Agenda 2030, said about a third of online gamblers in Spain use more than one operator. In practice, that means the new framework is not a niche compliance tweak; it is aimed at a meaningful chunk of the market.
- Players can still change or remove their limits voluntarily, but there is a built-in cooling-off period: any change takes three business days to become effective, and requests to raise a limit can only be made once every three months.
- The limits system is currently in testing, with the official launch expected in March 2027. Separately, the new player portal went live immediately and is accessible through Spain’s Cl@ve digital ID system.
The portal gives users a single dashboard showing aggregated deposits, stakes, wins and losses across all authorised operators, plus customised spending alerts, limit management tools, status tracking for limit- or account-related requests, downloadable annual activity certificates, and assistance in spotting possible identity theft by highlighting accounts linked to the same identity.
