ABRAS’s “betting money back on the table” claim is a one-week data slice with no methodology and a mid-period balance refund

ABRAS’s “betting money back on the table” claim is a one-week data slice with no methodology and a mid-period balance refund

The ABRAS study that spread after Vice President Geraldo Alckmin posted a video is not a monthly indicator at all: it compares one week in October, overlaps with the period when bettors were withdrawing balances, and does not isolate any variable. For PSPs and acquirers, the useful question is not the headline itself, but whether the data can support any claim about a betting ban changing household spending. On the source material, it cannot.

  1. The viral number is not ABRAS’s monthly Consumo nos Lares indicator, which the association presents on Thursday (29). What was reported instead was a 6.5% increase in food retail in Brazil in the week of 5 to 11 October 2026, compared with the same period in 2025. The results were presented by João Galassi at the Supervendas trade fair in Aracaju.
  2. This is a seven-day slice, compared with a single week from the previous year, then turned into a national trend. By contrast, ABRAS’s own monthly indicator had already accumulated a 2.71% increase from January to August 2026, before any prohibition.
  3. The week ABRAS chose coincided with the deadline for bettors to withdraw their balances. The government schedule allowed voluntary withdrawals until 5 October at 23:59, with sites required to go offline from 6 October. Anyone who missed the deadline was supposed to receive the funds through financial institutions between 9 and 14 October.
  4. That means the measured week included money that had been sitting on betting platforms and was being returned once. It is not new income hitting household budgets; it is a balance release. Even Moon BH, which supported the thesis, acknowledged that the refund schedule coincides with the 10.6% peak recorded in one region.
  5. There is also a calendar effect. In 2026, Children’s Day on 12 October fell on a Monday, creating a long weekend immediately after the measured week. In 2025, the date fell on a Sunday. Comparing a week before a long weekend with a normal week from the prior year is enough to inflate retail numbers without needing any betting story at all.

The scale matters here. BNLData uses the official GGR (gross gaming revenue) from SPA-MF: the regulated sector posted R$ 36.9 billion in 2025 and R$ 20.07 billion in the first half of 2026, or roughly R$ 3.3 billion a month, about R$ 770 million a week, across the country and across all modalities. Supermarkets, meanwhile, billed R$ 1,067 trillion in 2024, about R$ 20 billion a week. A 6.5% weekly jump implies more than R$ 1.3 billion in extra turnover, so the claim needs much more than a convenient week and a nice video.
